We’re now in the home stretch of the holiday eating season, which means we still have plenty of opportunities to mix superfoods in with those holiday meals.

City of Hope researchers have found that superfoods contain compounds with the ability to fight and prevent cancer. The foods are healthful on their own, but incorporating them into favorite dishes and meals reminds us how powerful nature can be in keeping us healthy.

Mushrooms and pomegranates contain substances that help block the hormones that make breast cancer grow and spread. The substances also appear to fight prostate cancer. Blueberries can inhibit the growth and spread of triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive types of the disease. And cinnamon extract can interfere with a tumor’s ability to grow by blocking the tumor from forming blood vessels to feed it.

Here are some festive recipes that make for a healthier table. Whether you’re making a Christmas morning brunch, handing out gingerbread cookies or making appetizers and sides for a big group, we’ve got you covered. So cook, eat and be merry, knowing that good food is powerful in many ways.

All these recipes are available at cityofhope.org/superfoods.

APPETIZERS:

Cinnamon Roasted Almonds

Guests will snack on these throughout the evening. (Keep some on hand for daytime snacking too.) To make them sweeter, add cinnamon sugar.

Blueberry Baked Brie

This appetizer will disappear before you know it.

Wild Blueberry Peppercorn Chutney

When hungry guests arrive, greet them with baked bread and this tasty spread.

Pesto-stuffed Mushrooms

These pretty, bite-sized mushroom bites won’t fill up guests before the meal. You can play with the recipe by adding other ingredients to the stuffing mixture.

Mini Mushroom Tarts

These are a great appetizer. Just be se sure to pile on the mushrooms; they’ll reduce and shrink when cooking in the oven.

SALAD:

Apple Walnut Pomegranate Salad
The bright holiday colors of this salad are reason alone to make it – it looks beautiful in a white bowl on the table.

SIDES:

Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Pomegranate

The pomegranates add a welcome touch of sweetness to this dish.

BREAKFAST AND TREATS:

Sweet Potato Waffles with Cinnamon and Honey Butter

These make for a perfect meal after unwrapping presents on Christmas morning.

Cinnamon Gingerbread Cookies

Could there be a cuter way to get your healthy dose of cinnamon?

Apple Blueberry Crumble
Pies and variations of them can be healthier than you think when made with minimal sugar.
